Police Stop Home Burglary in Progress This Morning

The suspect ran from officers in the area between Best and Peralta avenues on Thursday after he was caught attempting to break into a home, police said.

interrupted a burglary in progress Thursday morning, officers said.

The police department received a phone call at about 9:30 a.m. regarding a prowler in the 300 block of Best Avenue, police spokesperson Lt. Jeff Tudor said. Officers were dispatched and heard noises coming from the rear of one of the residences.

Police believed someone was attempting to burglarize the home and set up a perimeter. But after spotting officers, the suspect fled on foot to the area of Peralta Avenue and Pershing Drive, and a foot chase ensued, Tudor said.

One woman who lives on Pershing reported that she was outside her home when an officer told her to go inside because they were searching for a suspect; she saw the officer walk through her driveway to her backyard to look around.

Tudor said another perimeter was set up, and the suspect took a different tactic, shedding some clothes to try and change his appearance. Police didn't fall for the trick and stopped him on Peralta, where they arrested him without incident, according to Tudor.

As of mid-morning, three patrol cars, a motorcycle unit and several unmarked police cars were still in the area completing their investigation.
