Police's Proactive Patrolling Leads to Burglary Suspect's Arrest

A San Leandro police officer was aware of recent burglaries in San Leandro's commercial areas during nighttime hours. The officer used this information to proactively patrol these areas, which led the arrest of a burglary suspect.

Good police work and criminal intelligence led to the arrest of a suspect for burglary in San Leandro Friday evening.

Around 10:22 p.m., a San Leandro police officer was patrolling the 1900 block of Fairway Drive. The officer noticed a male subject dressed in dark clothing and wearing a backpack, walking on the property inside of the fenced-in area of a secured business.

The suspect, identified as Martin Hernandez, was seen climbing the exterior fence as if he were trying to exit the business property. The officer attempted to contact Hernandez, who then jumped down off the fence and ran from the officer back into the property located at 1951 Fairway drive.

Hernandez was then seen discarding items near a semi-truck parked on the lot. Upon the arrival of other SLPD officers, Hernandez was taken into custody without incident.

While investigating the scene, officers located several cargo containers that had their locks cut and one container that had the security seal removed.  On the ground next to the containers, bolt cutters and other tools commonly used during burglaries were located.
