Police: Gun, Cocaine Found on Teenager After Attempted Store Theft
Two teen boys were transported to the San Leandro Juvenile Justice Center after they attempted to steal merchandise from the Macy's store at Bayfair Center on Saturday, police said Monday.
Two teenage boys were taken in custody after they attempted to steal clothing from a local Macy's store on Saturday, one of them while carrying a loaded gun and a small amount of cocaine, according to San Leandro police.
At about 5:24 p.m. on Aug. 20 officers responded to a report of two juvenile males attempting to steal merchandise from the department store located at Bayfair Center, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor.
One of the boys, a 16-year-old from Hayward, attempted to steal a jacket and flee the store, becoming combative when detained by store security, Tudor said.
Security personnel told arriving officers on scene that another boy was still inside the store. The officers contacted the teen as he exited, finding he had concealed two shirts down the front of his pants, police said.
They also noticed the teen, a 17-year-old San Leandro resident, walking with a limp and searched him further, recovering a loaded .38 caliber revolver and a small amount of cocaine, according to Tudor.
"This incident could have turned tragic real quick. The officers involved used good observations skills and good tactics to prevent the suspect from hurting others and himself," Tudor said.
