Murder-Suicide Overshadows Police Blotter

The 19-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing a 15-year-old girl was found hanged Saturday. Other arrests and crime reports pale in comparison.

San Leandro experienced its first murder of 2012 on Friday, followed on Saturday by the apparent suicide of the prime suspect.

Myrna Umanzor, a 15-year-old San Leandro High School freshman, was stabbed to death in her own living room Friday evening.

Her alleged killer, 19-year-old Henry Leon of Oakland,was found hanged on Saturday, apparently by his own hand.

Monday, Jan. 23

At 12:07 pm police were called to the 1600 block of Washington Avenue, in the vicinity of Pelton Center, on a report of a person passing bad checks. Officers dipatched to the scene apprehended a suspect and made an arrest.

At 5:49 pm a caller reported a person drinking or on drugs on the 1200 block of Manor Boulevard, in the general vicinity of the branch library and Porky's Pizza Palace. Responding officers located and arrested a suspect.

Tuesday, Jan. 24

At 3:34 pm a battery was reported on the 1200 block of Orchard Avenue near Thrasher Park. Officers responded and conducted field interviews but were unable to locate a suspect.

At 4:59 pm a petty theft was reported at San Leandro Boulevard and Coburn Court. Officers collected evidence and took a report for followup investigation.

Wednesday, Jan 25.

At 5:58 pm a caller reported a suspicious vehicle in the 1300 block of Ardmore Drive but it was gone by the time officers reached the scene.

At 11:01 pm a traffic stop on the 1900 block of Davis Street resulted in an arrest.

Thursday, Jan. 26

At 5:19 pm a caller reported a burglary on the 14300 block of Washington Avenue. Officers dispatched to the scene collected evidence and took a report for subsequent investigation.

At 10:10 pm a caller from the 2300 block of Fairway Drive reported the violation of a temporary restraining order. Responding officers made an arrest.

Friday, Jan. 27

At 7:14 am a caller reported a battery in progress on the 15400 block of Hesperian Boulevard. Officers dispatched to the scene located a suspect and made an arrest.

At 12:18 pm dispatchers received a report of a battery in progress on the 14500 block of Birch Street. Officers located and arrested a suspect.

At 6:21 pm dispatchers received the fateful call of a homicide on the 1900 block of Pacific Avenue, as reported above.

Saturday, Jan. 28

At 11:46 am a petty theft was reported on the 1100 block of East 14th Street. Officers dispatched to the scene located and arrested a suspect.

At 10:29 pm a caller reported a disturbance on the 200 block of Castro Street. Responding officers made an arrest.

Sunday, Jan. 29

At 8:57 am police responded to a reported burglary on the 300 block of Harlan Street. Officers collected evidence and referred the incident to investigators.

At 9:54 am a caller reported a person brandishing a weapon on the 100 block of Haas Avenue. A K-9 unit was employed to help locate a suspect who was arrested and the matter was referred to investigators.
