A homeowner received minor injuries in his own backyard Thursday night when he grappled with a burglary suspect who resisted arrest even after a pair of San Leandro police arrived to arrest him.
The scary incident began at 8:10 pm Thursday when police were notified that a burglary had just occurred in the 400 block of Breed Avenue.
By the time officers arrived the suspect had already fled.
While canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses, the officer heard shattering glass and a woman's scream several houses away.
Two officers converged on the house and found the resident struggling with the suspect in the backyard.
The officers attempted to handcuff the suspect, but police say he resisted and attempted to bite them.
More officers arrived but the suspect continued to fight and at one point kicked an officer in the head, causing a minor injury, police said.
Officers finally subdued the man after a struggle that lasted four and a half minutes and involved the use of non-lethal force.
The victim received superficial injuries to his hands, arms and face.
The suspect received minor injuries. He was arrested for burglary, battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest and booked into Santa Rita Jail after being treated for his injuries.
