Elsie Avenue Closed by Police Searching for Potential Gunman

A man crashed his car in front of a home and took off on foot. Some residents told police they saw him with a gun, according to police.

Police activity has shut down a street in San Leandro this morning.

Officers have closed Elsie Avenue as they search for a man who is on foot and may have a gun, police Lt. Randall Brandt said.

Several officers saw a man traveling at a high rate of speed nearing 100 miles per hour at about 7:15 a.m., Brandt said.

The man, believed to be white or Hispanic and in his 20s, turned onto Elsie then crashed into the front of a home, Brandt said.

Brandt said the man, who was wearing a blue sweatshirt and jeans, fled the car with a backpack.

Some residents told police they saw the man with a gun, Brandt said.

San Leandro Police units set up a perimeter and checked the area for the suspect but were unable locate him.
