Male Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Train Near Washington Avenue

A Capital Corridor Amtrak train struck and killed a male pedestrian early Wednesday morning in San Leandro.

Firefighters and officers responded to the report of an individual being struck by a train at 9:11 a.m. near the intersection of Washington Avenue at Floresta Boulevard, according to Alameda County Fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

The male pedestrian, who has not been identified, was walking west from the east curb line of Washington Avenue, when he was fatally struck and pronounced dead at the scene. The man is believed to be around 70-years-old.

Train 527 was en route from Sacramento to San Jose. There were 54 passengers on the train at the time of the incident, and no one on board was injured, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.

The train was held at the scene, and continued on to San Jose around 11:30 a.m. A relief crew was brought in, but passengers remained on board.
           
Northbound train No. 528 was turned around at the Hayward station
because of the incident. Passengers were bused from Hayward to Oakland, Graham said.

San Leandro Police Department is currently investigating this incident.

Drivers were advised to avoid Washington Avenue from 143rd Avenue to Floresta Boulevard for a few hours.
