Patient Assaults Ambulance Worker

A man taken to San Leandro Hospital after a bar fight assaulted an ambulance worker and then tried to evade police.

A man taken to after a bar fight assaulted a female ambulance worker outside of the hospital early Sunday morning. 

The man, Devinne Chappell, 20, of Oakland, attacked the emergency medical technician while she was cleaning out an ambulance, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor, spokesperson for the . He tackled the woman and wrestled with her on the ground, police said.

The suspect took off running down 136th Avenue when another EMT showed up, Tudor said.

Police set up a perimeter and carried out a search, eventually finding the suspect leaning against a fence in a residential backyard.  

Chappell was arrested for false imprisonment and assault against an emergency medical technician, Tudor said. He is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday afternoon at the Hayward Hall of Justice. His bail was set for $15,000.

The bar fight that originally landed Chappell in the hospital took place at on Marina Boulevard. It's unknown whether Chappell was drinking illegally at the saloon.
