Oakland Shootings Overshadow San Leandro's Fears

The Oikos shootings dwarf the robbery on East 14th Street that prompted one San Leandro father to write Patch on Monday to ask what's going on.

 

The seven deaths at Oikos University, apparently , are tragic, and they shock our senses.

And that's part of the problem.

On Monday, while One L. Goh was allegedly shooting his classmates in Oakland, San Leandro father Matthew Beall was writing about an armed robbery Friday night at Papa John's Pizza place on East 14th Street that involved his son.

It was one of a dozen robberies that Patch tabulated and mentioned in passing in its .

Beall wanted to know why there hadn't been a full story.

After all, gunmen had waited behind the store for his son, a delivery driver, and forced him to open the security door so they could sneak in the back.

That's scary stuff.

"There is no news report that I have found regarding this robbery," that he published himself (as any member can). " The increased frequency of robberies at gun point is disturbing expecially for me a father and new home owner in San Leandro."

But, as he noted, "this is happenning so often now that it's not even big news anymore."

Isn't that the truth, especially with all eyes are transfixed on the inexplicable tragedy that occurred just a few miles away in Oakland.

Whatever prompted the Oikos shootings comes from a different reservoir of depravity than the robbery that occurred at Papa John's -- or the 11 other robberies reported in San Leandro between Monday and Saturday of last week.

But it's difficult to escape a growing unease or write it off to media hyperbole.

We had a ago.

A before that.

And, yes, the murders of two women in similar circumstances, allegedly by men who fathered their children, yet stabbed them, one as , the other .

It make you wonder what is this world coming to. Especially on days like this.
