The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. on Oct. 21 in the 14600 block of East 14th Street, where officers arrived to find 30-year-old Marvin Cruz suffering from gunshot wounds.

Cruz, an Oakland resident, had been sitting in the passenger seat of a car when two suspects approached on foot and one opened fire as the car drove away, according to police.

Officers and medical personnel at the scene rendered aid to Cruz, who was transported to a hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries on Friday.

The same day Cruz died, police followed up on leads that led them to one of the suspects, 18-year-old Oakland resident Maurice Martin, in Sacramento.

The following day, Oakland police located the second suspect, Michael Dwayne Breedlove, 18, at his Oakland home, San Leandro police said.

Both were turned over to San Leandro investigators and arrested on suspicion of murder.

Alameda County prosecutors charged both men with murder on Tuesday, San Leandro police Lt. Randall Brandt said.

Brandt said detectives made tracking down the suspects a top priority, and credited witness accounts and surveillance footage from nearby businesses with helping to find them.

"Without video and cooperation from witnesses, the case wouldn't be solved," he said.
