Oakland Man Arrested After Caught Driving with Loaded Handgun on E. 14th Street

Deonte Stevens, 20, of Oakland was arrested Monday evening for possessing a loaded firearm.

An Oakland man was arrested while driving on E. 14th Street Monday evening with a loaded firearm.

At around 6:40 p.m., a San Leandro police officer observed a vehicle driving on E. 14th Street, with an equipment violation. The officer made a traffic stop on the vehicle to enforce the violation. After observing one of the passengers appearing to be nervous and moving around, the officer developed probably cause to search the vehicle and passenger.

The officer found a loaded handgun underneath the seat the nervous subject was sitting on. The suspect, Deonte Stevens, 20, from Oakland, was arrested for possessing a loaded firearm.

“We encourage our officers to be proactive and have zero tolerance to this type of criminal activity," said Lt. Randall Brandt. "In order to maintain our public safety we will continue to have an offensive stance towards crime.”

Witnesses of criminal activity should contact the San Leandro Police Department’s Communications Division at (510) 577-2740 to report suspicious activity. Information can also be texted anonymously to 847411.

Ken, I grew up in a police state so I can tell you they are safe. You can walk at night and don't worry that you'll get mugged. Of course, you cannot say anything that displeases people without ending up in jail or worse, you cannot look or be different without having the same fate, you cannot defend yourself because you are guilty by just being accused. Now you may think you want to live in that type of society, one where there are no civil rights. I bet you think nothing will happen to you. Until it does, but then it'll be too late.

You have to be a fool or a racist not to understand why a young black man might be a little nervous around the police. They are killed at an alarming rate by law enforcement. The answer to why many of the young people that do commit petty crime come from Oakland, or a particular part of Oakland is economic. The black population of this country are still feeling the effects of a few centuries of apartheid. The lack of access to capital which retarded the development of a strong black capitalist class. David's question about profiling is to be expected, he's a racist. It would be more honest of him to admit that rather than beating around the Bush asking stupid questions.

so what happen to the East Palo Alto area ? it used to be mostly Black , now you find that just the old timer still live in that area . they got new shopping centers and all that . now you got a little of everything living in that area . So teach these low lifes or show them where you can get a real job in this area . but where are these people getting all these guns at . hope the police get all the guns off the streets .
