Motorcycle Crash Slows I-580 in Castro Valley

Expect traffic delays in the area.

A motorcycle crash on eastbound Interstate 580 in Castro Valley at Palo Verde Road is causing major traffic delays Thursday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, callers reported that the motorcycle driver was "recklessly" weaving in and out of traffic and splitting lanes before the crash.

The highway was shut down for a short period of time but has since reopened.

The driver was taken to Eden Medical Center with unknown injuries. No other vehicles were involved.

Since we are all just talking crap here...I have one more comment/question: Is it also legal for motorcyclists to drink and ride? Last time I checked, the same rules apply to drivers no matter how many wheels. Also, calling people stupid names really doesn't help get your point across.

I came up on this accident just as the EMT's were showing up. First I drove past his shoe, and I immediately started praying for the owner of the shoe and the family. Then I saw him in a tangled mess on the road just as the EMT's were kneeling down to help him. I started to cry...100 yards away were his helmet and his bike. It was terrible. I cant unsee what I saw. Seeing these posts about what is legal or not, or if it was his fault, geez people its a human life here. lets be real, everyone (on a bike or not) makes mistakes, this young man made one that may cost him his life. Don't kick him while he is down. It could just as easily be someone you know and love. Pay attention and share the road.

I agree, we all make mistakes. But I think one mistake he made does bear repeating: if you ride a bike, make sure you are wearing a good-quality, properly fitted helmet, and that you buckle it in. Wearing proper attire (i.e. long pants, leather jackets & gloves)) is very important as well.

I witnessed this accident with my own eyes. I also can't get the images out of my head. I saw him just moments before trying to squeeze between two big rigs in a way that made me think his judgment was impaired. Next thing I saw was his bike flying across the freeway in front of me, I had to swerve off the roadway to avoid it, and his body flew across the freeway toward oncoming traffic. It was the most terrifying thing i have ever witnessed, I was short of breath and couldn't stop screaming. I was asked to give a report to one of the officers the next day, I was then able to ask questions and get answers. It's one thing to be completely reckless BUT a completely different thing to be DRUNK while driving a motorcycle. Yes as drivers we all need to look out for one another, but when your drunk it's pretty hard....yes he was drunk! I'm sorry he injured himself. It is an absolute miracle that he survived and no one hit him. I am just thankful no one else was physically injured.

There's a huge difference between splitting lanes and riding like an idiot. Darwin is waiting to thin the herd... Sorry the guy went down and got hurt, but sometimes you earn it....
