Man Who Died In Taser Incident Identified

San Leandro Police have identified 32-year-old Oakland resident Darnell Hutchinson as the man who died after being tried to arrest him outside late Sunday night.

Police department spokesman Sgt. Doug Calcagno said authorities are still awaiting reports from the Alameda County Coroner and a toxicology study.

"There are no other facts ready for release. The investigation is still in progress," Calcagno said.

The four officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the circumstances of Hutchinson's arrest and death are investigated.

The incident began when police responded to a report of a "strange" man refusing to leave the restaurant at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said four officers were unable to subdue Hutchinson and used a Taser on him.

Once handcuffed, police said he fell ill. Emergency medical personnel called to the scene took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The who called police described Hutchinson's "strange" behavior and said he showed great strength in resisting the four officers trying to control him.

In 2005, a Dublin man died after being struck with a Taser during an arrest by San Leandro police. The city reached a settlement with surviving family members in that case.
