Man Arrested With Loaded Gun

Stopped for a robbery he didn't commit, police say he went for a gun in his pants.

San Leandro police have arrested 27-year-old Markese Thomas of Oakland for allegedly reaching for a gun while being stopped on the sidewalk with two other persons on suspicion that they had been involved in a robbery.

According to a press release, the robbery under investigation occurred Tuesday on the 1100 block of San Leandro Boulevard.

Thomas and his two associates were stopped on the 400 block of San Leandro Boulevard. Police said they matched the description of the robbery suspects.

Police later determined later that none of the three individuals stopped had been involved in the robbery.

But during the sidewalk stop, police say Thomas reached into his waistband, ignored commands to stop and grappled with the officers who sought to restrain him from going for what they thought was a weapon.

After officers gained control of Thomas they found a loaded, semi-automatic handgun down the front of his pants, police said.

The 27-year-old Oakland man was arrested for possession of a loaded firearm and resisting arrest.

The other two people stopped were cooperative during this incident, police said.

Thank goodness nobody was shot. For those so quick to condemn the police, this is a good example of what a dangerous job they face. I applaud them for bringing down this person in a safe manner.
