Man Arrested on Suspicion of Gross Vehicular Manslaughter After Collision Kills Passenger

The collision occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday night.

One man was killed and one man was arrested after a collision in San Leandro on Saturday night, according to a San Leandro Police Nixle Alert. The collision occurred in the intersection of Washington Ave. and Castro St. at about 11:20 p.m. 

According to the Nixle Alert, the passenger of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. Police say the driver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

When officers arrived, they found an Acura Integra and Chevy Camaro that had collided with each other. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by officers from the San Leandro Police Department’s Traffic Division. 

Both the driver and passenger of the Acura appeared to be Hispanic males in their late 20s or early 30s. They were both transported to local hospitals for medical treatment for injuries sustained in the collision. 

The passenger of the Acura was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police believe that the driver of the Acura had been driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages and has since been arrested on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter. The driver was the only occupant of the Chevy Camaro. He was not injured in the collision. 

The names of the suspect and victims are being withheld at this time, pending the identification of the suspect and victim in the Acura. Police will release the name of those men, after their identities have been confirmed and family members of the deceased victim have been notified. 

Lieutenant Robert McManus stated, “This is a tragic loss. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this senseless act.” 

The suspect’s arraignment date has not yet been set, but is expected to be Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon in the Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward.
