Man Admits to Robbing Five East Bay Banks

Amanuel Moreno, 20, of Oakland was arrested on suspicion of robbing banks in Union City, San Leandro, Hayward, Alameda and Oakland.

A 20-year-old Oakland man has admitted to robbing several East Bay banks because he needed money to feed his family, according to media reports.

Amanuel Moreno was arrested Friday and faces multiple robbery charges, according to online court records.

The Oakland Tribune reports that Moreno is believed to be involved in the following robberies:

  • Bank of the West, 4900 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, on Dec. 6 and Jan. 16
  • a U.S. Bank in San Leandro on Dec. 18
  • a Chase Bank in Union City on Dec. 18
  • a Wells Fargo in Hayward on Dec. 13

Moreno is also believed to have robbed a Chase Bank in Alameda on Dec. 6. However, Moreno didn’t admit to any involvement in the robbery, the Tribune reports.

According to the Tribune, Moreno is a former security guard. During the robberies, Moreno would give a demand note to tellers and, in some cases, indicated that he had a gun, though a gun was never seen.

Moreno, who was on probation for grand theft, was arrested Friday night at his home on 38th Street in Oakland after an officer recognized him from a bank surveillance image, according to the newspaper.
