Killer Of San Leandro Teen Gets 110-Year Sentence

25-year-old Leo Olguin was judged responsible for three deaths, including that of Vanessa Hurtado, when he crashed the car he was driving after fleeing police in 2009.

Bay City News -- A 25-year-old Hayward parolee, Leo Olguin, has been sentenced to 110 years in state prison for killing three passengers when he fled from police and crashed into the undercarriage of a big-rig in Hayward in December 2009.

Those killed were Vanessa Hurtado, 16, of San Leandro; Andrew Falcon, 17, of Livermore and Dominic Hall, 18, of Hayward.

A fourth passenger spent several days in the hospital with serious injuries.

Olguin, who had prior convictions for carjacking and possession of an assault weapon, was convicted Dec. 19 of three counts of second-degree murder for the three deaths he caused early the morning of Dec. 23, 2009.

His prior convictions doubled the sentence he received on Tuesday from Alameda County Superior Court Judge Roy Hashimoto.

When Olguin was arrested after the crash he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.09 percent, which put him above the legal limit for drinking and driving, according to Alameda County Sherrif's Department spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

Nelson said the incident began when two deputies who were looking for drunken drivers spotted the Mazda driving erratically near Mission Boulevard and Smalley Avenue.

Authorities said he attempted to evade police and ran multiple stop signs and red lights before crashing a Mazda sedan through the trailer of a big-rig truck and into a pole at Foothill Boulevard and A Street in Hayward.

Olguin suffered only minor injuries.

Authorities said he apparently ducked when the Mazda went under the big-rig, which partially severed the roof and crushed the rest of the car.
