It Takes Four Officers, Taser And Baton To Subdue Drunken Suspect In Attempted Homicide

One officer suffered a broken hand while arresting an Oakland man who allegedly shot up a bar shortly after midnight Friday.

It took four police officers, a Taser and some baton strikes to subdue a drunken man who police say fired three shots at a security guard at a bar on East 14th Street shortly after midnight Friday.

One officer suffered a broken hand during a lengthy struggle to place 23-year-old Oakland resident Jesus Monterroso under arrest for attempted homicide, battery against a police officer and various weapons charges.

The security guard was not injured.

According to a San Leandro Police Department press release, the incident began at 12:22 a.m. Saturday when dispatchers received a call of shots fired at La Oficina Bar at 14501 East 14th St.

Two officers arrived at the scene to find a man, later identified as Monterroso, trying to drive away in his car, which was parked around the corner from the bar on 145th Avenue.

As officers approached the car they said they noticed a gun between Monterroso's legs and tried to prevent him from grabbing it.

The report says the "very intoxicated" suspect resisted when officers tried to pull him out of the car and a struggle ensued.

At one point the gun fell near Monterroso, but one of the officers was able to snatch it first.

The report says the suspect continued to struggle, breaking away from police on three separate occasions, only to be caught again because he was too drunk to run far.

A third and fourth officer also responded to the call. One of the officers carried a rifle. Monterroso tried and failed to grab the rifle, police said.

In trying to subdue the suspect officers used a Taser and struck him with a baton, but still he resisted.

Only after the fourth officer arrived were police able to handcuff the suspect.

Monterroso was taken to Eden Medical Center for evaluation.

The officer who suffered the broken hand was seen at Kaiser Oakland.

Police department spokesman Sgt. Mike Sobek said officers believe it all started when Monterroso fired a shot in the air, inside the bar and then stormed out.

When the security guard came after him, the suspect allegedly fired three more shots at the guard.

"It was sheer luck that nobody was hurt," Sobek said.

He added it was equally fortunate that no one was seriously hurt during the arrest.

"He was a big, strong guy and obviously very intoxicated," Sobek said.

Police say Oakland police had a warrant out for Monterroso for an armed robbery that occurred in May.

The suspect could be formally charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's office as soon as Monday afternoon, Sobek said.
