Update: Paratransit Van Driver Held on Murder Charge After Crashing Into Hells Angel Motorcyclist on I-580

Crash shut down eastbound I-580 for more than 10 hours Saturday.

Bay City News — An East Bay Paratransit driver was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and murder after a fatal collision with a motorcyclist in San Leandro Saturday afternoon, police said.

The driver was identified by San Leandro police as Eddie Hall, 31, of Oakland. There were no passengers in the van at the time of the crash, which shut down eastbound I-580 for more than 10 hours.

CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said it appears the 4 p.m. crash followed an argument between Hall and the motorcyclist, who he said was a Hells Angels member.

The motorcyclist had been traveling in a group with seven or eight other motorcyclists, Calcagno said.

The Paratransit van struck the motorcyclist, dragging the motorcycle under the van for several miles before pulling over just east of the 150th Avenue on-ramp, Calcagno said.

After Hall pulled over to the shoulder, he attempted to flee and was arrested by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies, San Leandro police said.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arriving there. He has not been identified.

Interstate Highway 580 west of 150th Avenue remained closed until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Some nearby onramps were reopened as of 1:30 a.m.

San Leandro police and CHP are investigating whether Hall intentionally struck the motorcyclist.

"We don't think it was an accident," Calcagno said, but said it was unclear what the motive may have been.

East Bay Paratransit is a door-to-door public ride service for people who are disabled or suffering from other health conditions that prohibit them from using regular public transit. It serves most cities in Alameda County.
