A young boy is in serious condition tonight after good Samaritans pulled him and a young girl from the water near the San Leandro Marina on Sunday, police and fire officials said.

At 4:19 p.m., San Leandro police received 911 calls reporting that a young boy, initially reported by police as 6 years old but later confirmed by fire officials to be 7 years old, was in distress. The boy had been pulled from the water near Marina Park in the San Leandro Marina.

As emergency crews were responding to assist in the rescue, good Samaritans pulled the boy from the water and began performing life-saving measures, police said. Emergency medical personnel arrived to find the boy unconscious and a good Samaritan performing CPR, Alameda County fire officials said.

The boy was transported to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland for further treatment and is in serious condition, fire officials said. Officers are investigating how the boy got into the water and interviewing witnesses. Police believe the incident was an accident.

San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus extended his thanks to those involved in the rescue and called them "true heroes."
