Gang Signs Seen in Second Graffiti Attack on Garfield Elementary

Police say a graffiti attack Monday night included symbols of the Norteños street gang. Arrest made in Sept. 9 graffiti attack that also flashed Norteños signs.

Vandals struck Garfield Elementary School in the Marina District Monday night in an incident that was less extensive than a that occurred on Sept. 9.

San Leandro police department spokesman Lt. James Tudor said both attacks showed signs of the Norteños street gang.

But he said there were also differences between the two events and that it was not possible to say whether they were related.

Tudor said a juvenile suspect has been arrested in connection with the Sept. 9 attack. Police are still investigating Monday night's vandalism.

School officialls initially thought there were no gang signs in the first attack.

Garfield prinicipal Lynda Hornada said the outside of the kindergarden, as well as the exteriors of the first and second grade classrooms, were defaced. Maintenance workers have erased most of the damage.

"An event like this is unsettling to our entire community," she wrote in a newsletter to parents, adding that she and the teachers would talk to students about the vandalism.
