A Hayward man is in Santa Rita jail today on suspicion of driving under the influence after the car he was allegedly driving smashed into a power pole near the San Leandro/San Lorenzo border at 3:50 am Thursday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a man they believe to be Juan Arias was driving a Ford Ranger southbound on Washington Avenue in San Leandro, at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.
As the driver approached the intersection of Washington Avenue at Grant Avenue, he allowed his vehicle to turn right in an unsafe manner, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway, police say.
The Ranger collided with a power pole posted on the south west corner of the intersection of Grant Avenue at Via Alamitos.
The driver, who authorities believe to be Arias, fled the scene in the vehicle. Arias was later detained by Alameda County Sheriff's Office Deputies.
After CHP officers arrived and conducted a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) investigation, Arias was placed under arrest for DUI. He was also charged with hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license.
Arias was transported to Valley Care Medical Center in Pleasanton for observation and was later booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
This collision is still being investigated.
