Stolen Gun Retrieved During Downtown Arrest

A man who fled a car in downtown San Leandro was arrested for alleged possession of a stolen 9 mm handgun early Sunday morning.

A San Pablo man was jailed for gun possession today after a foot chase that began during a traffic stop in downtown San Leandro early Sunday morning.

San Leandro police say that at 12:49 am, an officer made a traffic stop on a Honda Accord. The vehicle, which was occupied by two male passengers, was pulled over on Washington Avenue near Parrott Street.

When the passenger fled the car on foot, police set up a perimeter and searched the area.

During the foot chase police say that the subject, later identified as Francisco Patino, 22, of San Pablo, removed a handgun from his waistband and tried to throw it under a nearby vehicle.

Patino was taken into custody without incident. The 9 mm handgun recovered during the incident was loaded and was reported stolen out of Placer County.

The driver of the vehicle was identified and released at the scene.
