Discovery of 2 Hand Grenades Prompts Evacuations, A Call to Bomb Squad
Employees found the explosive devices at Alameda County Industries
Information provided by San Leandro Police Nixle Alerts—
On Monday at 3:50pm, San Leandro Police Officers responded to Alameda County Industries, located at 610 Aladdin Ave. on a report of the discovery of two hand grenades by employees. The business is a garbage collection point for ACI. According to employees, they were discovered in the refuge area of the business.
When officers responded, they determined that the grenades were authentic and called the Alameda County Sheriff's Department's Bomb Squad for assistance.
SLPD officers evacuated the business and when the Bomb Squad arrived, the deputies confirmed that the grenades were possibly active and recovered them both. The ACSO Bomb Squad transported both grenades to their "off site" ordinance area for disposal.
Lt. Mike Sobek said, "We encourage anyone who has ammunition they no longer want or any explosive devices that they may have found, to contact their local police department for assistance. Throwing them into the garbage is never a safe way to dispose of these dangerous items.
Because we never know if they are live or not, we will always err on the side of caution by calling the Alameda County Sheriff's Bomb Squad for assistance. These deputies have extensive training and were able to retrieve the devices in a safe manner."
