Civilian Medical Emergency Prompts Helicopter Airlift At Bancroft Middle School

Campus is also on lockdown due to a nearby emergency unrelated to the school, a board member says.

Two incidents have interrupted the day at Bancroft Middle School but neither is connected to the student body, a school board member told Patch.

In the first incident a community member was taken to the school by ambulance and then picked up by a helicopter which used its athletic field as a landing place, school board member Mike Katz-Lacabe said in an email.

In addition, he said, the school was put under lockdown for a nearby incident unrelated to the medical emergency.

Patch will have more information as it becomes available.

More detail from the Alameda County Fire Department: "This morning just after 11AM, Alameda County firefighters responded to a medical emergency in San Leandro on Haas Avenue. Due to the patient’s medical condition and predetermined medical protocols, the patient was transported via helicopter to Stanford Hospital. The Bancroft Middle School field was used as the landing zone for the helicopter transport. Firefighters and the San Leandro Police Department worked closely with Bancroft Middle School officials to quickly move students indoors from the field and organize a closed campus so that the patient could be transported. Less than 15 minutes after clearing the scene of this emergency firefighters returned to the Bancroft Bridge, just north of Estudillo (and adjacent to the field at Bancroft Middle School) for a medical emergency/rescue on the Northwest side of the embankment in a dry creek bed. As a result of a male patient sustaining traumatic injuries, a helicopter was requested and responded to the incident but was not used to transport the patient."
