Citizen's Report of 'Suspicious Vehicle' Leads to Arrest of 2 Men

Police say the men were inside a stolen car when they were arrested.

Two men allegedly found in possession of stolen property were arrested in San Leandro early Thursday morning, a police lieutenant said.

Police dispatch received a call from a citizen who arrived to work and saw a suspicious vehicle on Republic Avenue west of Merced Street shortly before 6 a.m., Lt. Randall Brandt said.

The citizen suspected the vehicle may be connected to thefts in the area, Brandt said. He continued to follow the vehicle and updated police dispatch with his observations until the suspects drove away, according to Brandt.

Officers then responded to the area and located and stopped the vehicle on Davis Street near Doolittle Drive, he said.

Two men inside the suspicious vehicle were allegedly in possession of stolen metal from a business in the 2400 block of Verna Court, Brandt said.

The vehicle they were driving was stolen from Oakland on April 14, according to Brandt. The men later identified as San Leandro resident Mark Butterworth, 46, and Oakland resident Beyan Dennis, 39, were both arrested and booked into county jail.
