Citizen Leads Police To Stolen Car & Suspect

Police say transient Michael Nelson, 26, was found in possession of a car stolen earlier this month in San Leandro.

When a strange car pulled into his driveway on Dutton Avenue Tuesday morning, the owner walked across the street to San Leandro Police Department headquarters to report the incident.

There, detectives dropped what they were doing and followed the lead to a car occupied by 26-year-old Michael Nelson, a transient.

According to a police statement, detectives discovered that the car had been stolen earlier this month in San Leandro. They arrested Nelson on suspicion of being in possession of a vehicle.

Police department spokesman Lt. Randall Brandt said this was a good example of the police and public working together.

“The citizen recognized something suspicious and immediately reported the activity to us," he said. "Detectives put aside a lower priority investigation to immediately investigate the matter and a stolen vehicle was recovered and returned to its owner.”
