UPDATE: East 14th Street Reopens After CHP Chase Ends in Crash

The vehicle that failed to yield to a CHP stop led to a chase where the suspect ended up crashing into a pickup truck while traveling through the intersection at Sybil Avenue.

By Bay City News

A California Highway Patrol chase in San Leandro ended with a collision when the fleeing suspect's car struck a pickup truck and injured the driver Wednesday afternoon, according to a CHP spokesman.

Around 3:10 p.m. the driver of a 1995 white Honda Accord was traveling northbound when he failed to yield to a CHP stop on East 14th Street, which led to a pursuit, according to the CHP.

The driver attempted to pass a 1992 Toyota pickup truck, which was attempting to make a left turn onto westbound Harlan Street, but instead, the Honda crashed into the Toyota, a CHP officer said.

After the collision, the suspect took off from the car on foot. Officers chased after him and detained him with the assistance of a nearby resident, according to the CHP. The suspect has been identified as a Santa Rosa man.

He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has been charged with evading police, a CPH officer said.

The pickup truck driver, 28-year-old Jeremy Jacobs, of Berkeley, was hospitalized with moderate injuries, according to the CHP.

Authorities are investigating if the vehicle the suspect was driving was stolen, a CHP officer said.

SL has turned into a magnet for crime and losers...I hope the person in the pickup faired better than their vehicle!

There is no doubt that petty crime, what can turn in to violent crime given the desperation of individuals and availability of firearms, has increased in San Leandro. But the reason any community might be a magnet is that there are those who are in desperate straits within walking distance of it. Crime is associated with unemployment, poverty etc. It is not, as one of the present candidates for president who has always had plenty of money and connections, to do with individual choices people make.

why take the scum to a hospital for ?he can live with his hurts and pains . he can stay in jail til we find out who is going pay for the damages of all cars and everyone else that got hurt . give him no bail .

No mercy for the douche bag... Hangem high!!!
Fred Eiger August 16, 2012 at 01:19 am
Wrong Richard. Crime is NOT associated with unemployment, poverty etc. It is because people have no respect for a civilized society or others. Save your sour grapes for your own nefarious blogs.
Mike August 16, 2012 at 02:46 am
Fred maybe you should talk with the police, they disagree with you. Also they would tell you that because of the economy crime is spreading and is happening all over the bay area even in the tonier suburbs.

There are studIes which do show a correlation between poverty and crime. So Richard IS correct. They are all easily found with a little time and effort to research.

That criminal ruined another man's truck and maybe changed his life from the injuries. Now i bet he has left a family with all the bills. He should have got a job and everyone would have been better for it
Richard Mellor August 16, 2012 at 12:42 pm
I know nothing about the man in this case. But if it was a simple as just getting a job, the 30 million or so people the US economy refuses to put to work would be working. The pressures in US society are far greater than most advanced capitalist countries due to the poor social safety net here. Plus, people work on average about two months a year longer than most workers in these countries. Then there's the poor health system (lack of health care is the main cause of bankruptcy) and the ridiculous "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentally perpetrated by people that have been given everything without working like the imbecile Georg W Bush for example. Veterans get a much different reception when they return and money is needed for their mental and physical repair than when they send them out there. It's a lot of pressure.

Mike, I could care less what these cops who are politically correct and wanting to pad their own pensions say what crime is associated with unemployment and the economy. That is all crap. If that were the case then the 1930's and 1940's would have been the height of lawlessness. The cops who say that crime is linked to the economy are being Politically Correct in sucking up to elected Democrats who have no conscious when it comes to raising taxes to pay for bloated Police and Fire Departments pay and pnesions.
Fred Eiger October 6, 2012 at 11:48 am
Absolute nonsense. Crime is a choice, it is done due to a lack of respect for a civilized society. Then having want to be intellectuals attempt to justify it as being economic only leads to more crime as the criminal knows he can plea sympathy from these bleeding heart liberals.
Fred Eiger October 6, 2012 at 11:50 am
Oh please, stick a sock in it Mellor. "Poor safety net", "poor healthcare". You are an absolute putrid fool. These criminals are just the scum of the Earth. They don't want to work, they have no respect for society, no respect for civilization and no respect for humanity in general. They think they can just take whatever they want whenever they want because they think society owes them a living.

Rob, *I* provide decent, safe, affordable housing for low income folks. It can be done. Yes, IRead More take Section 8 vouchers. Guess what, they work, and they disperse poverty so you do not end up concentrating poor people into a ghetto. All you're doing is creating ghettos. As for the religious women, surely you understand the difference between charity freely given and taxes confiscated from me at the point of a gun.
David June 19, 2013 at 07:46 pm
As previously mentioned, if there were a "shortage" of affordable housing, rather thanRead More creating a brand new ghetto in the middle of downtown SL, those tax dollars could have gone to buying up blocks of foreclosed houses and fixing them up. But you'd rather build new construction at a higher cost to taxpayers. Wonder why...
Rob Rich June 19, 2013 at 08:00 pm
If there wasn't a demand, people wouldn't be lining up dozens deep for every unit. These will beRead More nice units, well managed. There are folks buying up & rehabbing foreclosed properties. Remember, I sent you a link? As for your distaste for taxes (except perhaps when they fund your splendid education), the Sisters disagree w

What brand is the pastry cutter?
Rowena Peñalba June 18, 2013 at 11:27 pm
It's slightly used but I don't remember where I bought it from. I don't see any brand name on it. IRead More just priced it based on the lowest one available on Amazon. If you're interested, make me an offer. Maybe we can agree on it. Thanks for your inquiry.
