Cherryland Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges For Beating Puppy With a Leather Belt

A man was shown in an Instagram video whipping his 10-month-old puppy with a leather belt.

A man from the Cherryland area of unincorporated Hayward faces animal cruelty charges after beating his 10-month-old puppy with a leather belt in a video posted on Instagram.

Terrell Keith Daniels, 54, will be arraigned next week for the suspected abuse in Alameda County Superior Court.

Daniels’ 17-year-old son, DeJean, recorded the video of his father whipping the dog 11 times with a belt. He only intended for his friends to see it.

On Sept. 18, witnesses who saw the Instagram video reported it to Alameda County animal control.

After watching the video, deputies traced the recording to Daniels’ home in the 19600 block of Camden Avenue.

Alameda County animal control officers removed two dogs found in Daniels’ residence and they were taken to the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin. The dogs, Fluffy and Lovey, did not show any signs of neglect and were perfectly healthy, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman J.D. Nelson.

According to an article from Bay Area News Group, Daniels was disciplining the dog for going to the bathroom.

In an interview with KRON 4, Daniels says in tears, “I apologize. My heart is so broken right now.”

If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, Daniels will face up to one year in jail.
