Car Theft Suspect Caught After Fleeing from Traffic Collision

San Leandro police officers arrested Esteban Gonzalez after he fled from a traffic collision.

San Leandro police officers arrested a suspect for auto theft and a hit and run after he fled a traffic collision on Monday around 3:30 p.m., according to a press release.

A SLPD patrol officer saw a white vehicle driving at a high rate of speed westbound on Estudillo Avenue. The driver, Esteban Gonzalez, lost control and collided with an unoccupied parked car near the Main Library.

Gonzalez fled on foot towards the San Leandro Creek.

Officers lost sight of him and set up a perimeter in the area where he was last seen. Another officer saw Gonzalez walking, approached him and he fled on foot again.

Officers were able to catch Gonzalez, who is approximately 20 years old, and arrest him.

No injuries were reported. Officers later discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen.
