Car Burglary Suspect Arrested After Citizen Reports Hearing Glass Breaking
Police say they found Keith Gibbs in a gated parking lot standing next to a car with a smashed window.
A tip from a citizen led to the arrest of a car burglary suspect in San Leandro on Saturday night, police said.
At about 9 p.m. on Saturday, an alert citizen who was in the 1100 block of East 14th Street heard glass breaking and thought it was unusual because the noise came from a gated parking lot, San Leandro police said.
The woman suspected that someone might be breaking into a vehicle and she reported her observations to San Leandro police immediately, according to police. Officers who came to the scene detained 23-year-old Keith Gibbs, of Oakland, who was holding bolt cutters and standing near a vehicle with a broken window, police said.

Gibbs claimed the vehicle was his but an investigation confirmed that was not true, according to police. Gibbs was then arrested for breaking into the vehicle and attempting to steal it.
San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Randall Brandt said in a statement, "Communities throughout the Bay Area continue to experience spikes in property crimes. We need to continue working together as a community to make a difference in fighting crime."
