Burglary Suspects Extracted From Crashed Getaway Car

An Oakland man and a teen accomplice allegedly drove away from a San Leandro burglary and smashed into a truck. They were freed by firefighters, then arrested by SLPD.

A pair of burglary suspects were arrested Friday -- after firefighters extracted them from the car they had crashed while allegedly leaving the scene of a residential burglary in San Leandro.

Police say it all began when a San Leandro woman was driving up to her home on the 300 block of Harlan Street Friday morning only to notice a strange vehicle in front of her house with a man sitting inside.

According to the police account, moments later she saw a second man leave her house with some of her belongings. As the two men drove away, the homeowner dialed 911 and followed them.

Near the intersection of San Leandro Street and 92nd Avenue, the suspect vehicle ran a red light and collided with a large semi-truck, according to police who add that they were not in pursuit at the time.

San Leandro police did arrive on scene while emergency workers for the Oakland Fire Department were using special tools to pry the suspects out of their badly damaged vehicle.

The suspects were transported to Highland Hospital for treatment prior to incarceration.

Police say they found a loaded firearm inside the suspect car along with several items from the victim’s residence, which they returned to the owner.
