Armed Gang Robbed Bancroft Avenue Safeway Last Night

The crime occurred at 9:01 pm Tuesday. Five gunmen ordered patrons and employees to get down on the floor while they emptied the tills, then fled.

Five armed suspects entered the Safeway store at 555 Bancroft Avenue last night, ordered patrons and employees to get down on the floor, and forcibly removed money from the drawers of two cashiers.

The incident occurred at 9:01 pm, Tuesday, Sept, 25, according to San Leandro police.

No physical injuries were reported.

Police say all of the suspects were wearing dark hoodie-type sweatshirts and were wearing bandanas over their faces in an effort to conceal their identities.

After interviews with witnesses and victims, police said it appears that the suspects were black males in their early twenties.

At least one of the handguns was described as a black semi-automatic.

Police say the suspects fled the store via the main entry/exit doors.

Investingators believe the suspects then ran north on Bancroft Avenue.

At the time of this release, there was no suspect vehicle information available.

The amount of cash taken is unknown.

“This was a brazen and potentially dangerous situation," said police department spokesman Lieutenant Rick DeCosta. "Fortunately, everyone inside the store complied with the suspects’ demands and no one was hurt.”

yes it was very nice that no one got hurt . hope the police can find the ones that did this . the city should put up a reward to see if we can find these no good people .
Lisa September 26, 2012 at 07:42 PM
Lovely, and it's only going to get worse. I feel bad for the employees and customers in the store but never in my life would I go anywhere in this city after dark. It's gotten to the point where 6pm/7pm at the latest is about my threshold if I absolutely have to go to Safeway or Rite-Aid. And unfortunately this only makes me feel better about doing all my shopping outside of this city.
DDM September 26, 2012 at 08:08 PM
What is Safeway going to do to improve the security of its employees? What will SLPD do to ensure the safety of our community?
Ken Briggs September 26, 2012 at 08:13 PM
guess the store has to install a alarm ststem in the store like the banks have when they get robbed. yes ,I hope that all of the help that worked while this happen comes back to work, but safeway could give them a few days off with pay . if these guys did all this at safeway , then other stores in the area needs help just as well . get more police in the area .

Stories like this are why I am running for city council. Businesses will not come here until we can start to manage this problem better. Lisa, I agree with you. We live near the greenhouse and if errands ever have to be ran after 6pm I do them, and my wife and kids stay home. Kinda sad really..
Ken Briggs September 26, 2012 at 11:16 PM
Justin Hutchison , you say you live by the Greenhouse , looks like you have the same problems in your area . the police have been over on the side where FoodMax and Goodwill are on a weekly deal . the Safeway is by Oakland and you are going to do what ? the city needs more copsat night as well as cday time . by the way what were the police doing by the fire house on 143rd av tuesday afternoon when you have six to eight polce cars about 2;30 in the afternoon . lets hope all the folks that were in the Safeway store last night still shop at the store and all the help comes back .
Justin H. September 27, 2012 at 12:12 AM
Yep Ken you are correct. Robberies are up 24% over LY As I stated, over here is just as dangerous. As crime in San Leandro is hitting a boiling point. The Food Maxx you speak of less then a half mile from my house was armed robbed recently as well. I will not let my wife or children go out shopping after a certain hour. its just dangerous at this point. I also agree with what you are saying about staff scheduling. One of the biggest reasons why I feel like I am a good candidate is my time in the investigations and management field. I believe if we begin to utilize smart scheduling that we can do more with our current resources. SLPD is definately on board and recently hired a crime analyst who will help determine trends in times and areas where officers can be utilized. As for yesterday at at 2:30pm I am assuming a felony warrant being served.
Ken Briggs September 27, 2012 at 12:34 AM
Justin , we can not blame the police, blame the court system . the police bust the DUI drivers and the courts do nothing , look at the ones thay been stopped three ,four times and they still drive . after the 2nd DUI they should be made to go to AA meetings weekly for life . then put all these gang folks together no mather what gang they are in the courts do a poor job while the police try to do a hell of a good job ,the courts seem to still let the bad boys and girls out .
LJS September 27, 2012 at 02:58 AM
Crime analyst? Isn't that the Chief's job? How much did this crime analyst cost the taxpayers? If SLPD needs to hire a crime analyst maybe the cost should come out of the chief's pay. Just sayin.....
Fred Eiger September 27, 2012 at 03:25 AM
Why is anyone shocked that this robbery happened at this Safeway? Really, it's only 4 blocks from Oakland. This has been happening at this location for 40 years, they come from Oakland, rob and run right back. Nothing new here. But, we need to stop being "politically correct" and keep a heavy police presence along Durant Avenue. Let the Zocalo crowd complain all they want, until we start clamping down HARD crime will continue. Oh and before the resident idiots of Patch chime in, let me say this sarcastic phrase; "Do any of you law and order types know how many millions the CEO of Safeway made last year? Or how many people he laid off?"
Barry Kane September 27, 2012 at 03:46 AM
I stopped shopping in San Leandro, I only go below 580 to get on/off the freeway ramp
Justin H. September 27, 2012 at 03:48 AM
LJS no unfortunately that is not the chiefs job. The chief jobs is to lead and manage the entire police department. Do you want the head coach to also be the gm to also be the offensive cordinator. It just doesn't work, most cities employ a crime analyst. Fact is we are the neighbor to one of the most dangerous cities in America. If we don't address this issue it will consume us.
Ken Briggs September 27, 2012 at 03:52 AM
Fred , my man it was Not one person but five men together , so they must have cased the store out and still do it when have few people shopping . lets hope the police can find any of them and put them away for a few years and make them repay all the money they stold .
Fred Eiger September 27, 2012 at 03:59 AM
Correct Ken, but what is the difference? Crime up along Oakland have been happening for 40 years.

I was shopping at the Bancroft Safeway this morning at 6am. I had the nicest cashier who made me smile. I am angry about this incident, yet pleased that we have a nice grocery store in the neighborhood. I am happy to support them.
Ken Briggs September 27, 2012 at 12:08 PM
as of this morning at 5.00 am news on ch 2 news the Oakland police may have got one of the safeway robbers and towed the van that the guy was in . lets hope if this guy was one of the robbers that the police can get the rest of them today .
Jerry White September 27, 2012 at 06:32 PM
I like the Bancroft Safeway better than the Downtown one. Less crowded, fewer panhandlers outside the store. Sorry to hear about this robbery. It must have been terrifying for the people in the store. I like shopping in SL because I like to support local business. Crime is an issue in our town no matter where you shop. That's city life. Do you move next to the airport and then complain about the noise? Unless you want to drive out to Danville and support that town, you might as well shop locally and be a part of the community here.
JK September 28, 2012 at 02:50 AM
I remember a visit to this Safeway last year during which the cashiers casually and audibly compared their robbery experiences at the store (i.e., comparing various different robberies) while ringing up customers. Apart from not being very professional, it spoke to how common these occurrences seem to be there.
David September 28, 2012 at 03:46 AM
Moats and gates? Because if that's your platform, I'd actually consider voting for you. Add in some alligators and I'm sold.
Barry Kane September 28, 2012 at 05:38 AM
Not to mention, I overheard several Safeway employees chatting at the new Castro Valley Safeway at Metro 580 Center about how they finally escaped the creepy and low life San Leandro stores when they received their transfer's to the new store in CV.
Fred Eiger September 28, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Why are people so surprised at this robbery? When you have extreme liberals advocating for more low-income housing in the City. When City Hall actively seeks welfare recipients to move into town. When you have School Board members using as their platform bringing in more kids to San Leandro to leech off the Free Lunch and Breakfast programs. When you have imbeciles who complain about "capitalism, racism, sexism, CEO salaries" on Patrch etc this is the result. If these low-income apartments are forced at downtown BART you can be assured the final nail will be driven into the coffin. But, then that's what the liberals who advocate all of the aforementioned ultimitely want.

Guess what? Crime is everywhere now.....the suburbs like SL are not immune to crime anymore. Safeway Bancroft always wanted to close due to the area high crime rate. Don't blame OAKLAND for your issues of crime ....it's everywhere! DEAL WITH IT!
V H September 29, 2012 at 07:00 AM
JUSTIN, JUSTIN Sure Oakland has the crime....guess what? so does San Leandro deal with it! Spreading hate doesn't help you or anyone! never getting my vote HATER bashing OAKLAND! shame on you!
Ken Briggs September 29, 2012 at 02:39 PM
so , Fred Eiger and V H , what about the robbery of the store in Oakland friday on Broadway . after all the safeway is just a block or two from Oakland . is does not mather where the stores are at , if some bad boy or girl wants to rob they will rob, but when you have two and five people together doing it at the same time, give them twenty years to life when found . we need more jobs in this area and get a few coff of welfare . as for the bad folks you will always find them around some where . just give some rough justice and whack off a leg , that should stop some of the crime in this area .
