Five armed suspects entered the Safeway store at 555 Bancroft Avenue last night, ordered patrons and employees to get down on the floor, and forcibly removed money from the drawers of two cashiers.
The incident occurred at 9:01 pm, Tuesday, Sept, 25, according to San Leandro police.
No physical injuries were reported.
Police say all of the suspects were wearing dark hoodie-type sweatshirts and were wearing bandanas over their faces in an effort to conceal their identities.
After interviews with witnesses and victims, police said it appears that the suspects were black males in their early twenties.
At least one of the handguns was described as a black semi-automatic.
Police say the suspects fled the store via the main entry/exit doors.
Investingators believe the suspects then ran north on Bancroft Avenue.
At the time of this release, there was no suspect vehicle information available.
The amount of cash taken is unknown.
“This was a brazen and potentially dangerous situation," said police department spokesman Lieutenant Rick DeCosta. "Fortunately, everyone inside the store complied with the suspects’ demands and no one was hurt.”
