UPDATE: CHP Officer Among Several injured in I-580 Collision Near San Leandro

A California Highway Patrol officer was one of the three injured during the collision this afternoon, according to CHP officials.

Update from Bay City News—

A California Highway Patrol officer was among three people injured in a crash that occurred along eastbound Interstate Highway 580 near San Leandro this afternoon, according to the CHP.

The crash was reported just after 2 p.m. along the on-ramp from Fairmont Drive to eastbound I-580.

Preliminary information indicates that the CHP officer had exited a patrol car to assist the drivers of two disabled vehicles that were stopped near the on-ramp, California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Thomas said.

A third vehicle struck one of the disabled cars, pushing it forward and causing it to hit the officer, Thomas said. The officer was taken to Eden Medical Center with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, Thomas said.

The drivers of the two disabled cars were not seriously hurt but were taken to the same hospital as a precaution, Thomas said. As of 4 p.m., the two right lanes of eastbound I-580 remained closed and traffic in the area was heavy, Thomas said. The lanes were expected to remain shut down for another two to three hours.
