4 Arrested After Report of Robbery Leads to Chase of Stolen Car

Police officials say the car had been taken earlier in the day during a carjacking.

A man and three boys who led police on a chase in a stolen vehicle after a reported robbery in San Leandro were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday, police said.

Two male juveniles were walking south in the 900 block of Bancroft Avenue near Haas Avenue where they were robbed at gunpoint around 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police.

One of the suspects took their cellphone and fled into a waiting vehicle that drove towards Oakland, police said. The robbery was reported to police dispatch with a detailed description of the suspect and suspect vehicle, according to police.

Officers searched for the suspect vehicle and found it in Oakland near the San Leandro city border, police said.

A records check of the vehicle's license plate revealed that it was stolen in a carjacking in Oakland earlier that day, according to police. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspects led officers on a pursuit, police said.

The vehicle crashed into a patrol car and continued to flee until it struck another vehicle on Bancroft Avenue near 90th Avenue in Oakland, according to police.

The driver of the suspect vehicle and a passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The passenger was detained a short time later, police said. Officers deployed a police dog to catch the driver but the dog accidentally bit a bystander, according to police.

The officers stopped the chase to aid the bitten bystander, police said. Two other passengers in the car were arrested along with the runaway passenger on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Detectives were able to track the driver in unincorporated San Leandro on Thursday when he was arrested on suspicion of robbery, carjacking, felony evasion and assaulting a police officer.
