Citywide Garage Sale Tops Weekend To-Do List

Hunt for bargains in the morning, recycle waste in the afternoon and look for events and fun in San Leandro.

 

Citywide Garage Sale and Recycling Event

When/Where: Saturday, May 19

The sale will be held rain or shine, from 8 am to 1 pm. Over 300 homes are taking part. Find a map of participating homes and other details in the Friday article on Patch.

The Recycling Event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Residents can recycle unwanted household items such as appliances, tires, scrap metal, clean wood, computer equipment and mattresses at the Alameda County Industries recycling facility. You will need to bring a driver's license with a San Leandro address to get the free drop off.

The Happy Birds Performing Parrots Show

Where/When: Saturday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the 1241 Manor Blvd., San Leandro.

Why Go:  This is part of the library's Saturday Morning Family Program series and is hugely popular. The Happy Birds show will feature the antics of Amazon parrots, brightly colored macaws and talented cockatoos performing tricks and singing. Come prepared to have some fun during this interactive show with some very special feathered-friends. 

Price: Admission is free, but space is limited and you must have a ticket to attend. You can get a ticket from the library in advance. Call (510) 577-7970 for more information.

 

San Leandro Historical Railway Public Hours

Where/When: Saturday May, 19 at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1302 Orchard Avenue, San Leandro. (Additional special open house June 2 and 3)

Why Go: Come watch San Leandro Historical Railway Society members working on the model railroad and running trains. Can't make it this weekend? Well, mark your calendars because there will also be a special summer open house for all ages June 2 and 3.  The society will be running G & O scale trains outside on the garden railway and HO scale trains inside. There will also be a bake sale and yard sale to benefit the society.  

Price: Admission is free. Donations to the historical depot are always welcome. 

 

"Jazz, Acapella and Other Classy Tunes - A Musical Extravaganza by the Better Music World Club"

Where/When: Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at the located at 300 Estudillo Avenue, San Leandro.

Why Go: Here is a chance to get your culture-fix right here in town. Who needs the big city when we have local events like this one?  The performance is being sponsored by the San Leandro Public Library and the Arts Council of San Leandro. It is being directed and produced by Kathleen Skinner-Saffas and will include virtuoso singers and musicians. Organizers say it is for everyone of all ages and describe it as  "good clean family oriented entertainment".

Price: Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the Information desk.

 

Carnival Fundraiser for the Ashland Little League Trophy Fund

Where/When: Sunday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at baseball fields located behind the new Holland Park at 16301 E. 14th Street, San Leandro.

Price: Free admission. Game booth tickets are just 25 cents a piece. The raffle drawing tickets are 3 for $1 or 20 for $4.  Every person that attends the carnival will get a free entry into the drawing for two (2) Oakland A's tickets. Extra entries are only $1 each.

 

Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants Game Broadcast

Where/When: Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. at the 101 Parrott Street, San Leandro.

Why Go: Come root for your favorite Bay Area baseball players - take your pick of teams the Giants or the A's,  and show your spirit with other fans. Admit it, even if you can't get to the actual game in San Francisco at AT&T Park, you really do need to get up off your couch and get out this weekend. San Leandro has at least two sports bars with lots of events happening day in and out.
