Sanity saver: the backyard sandbox

When you can't get out. And nice weather and wiggly bodies threaten kidlet and mama melt-downs alike. We go to our happy place. Discover where our adventures (and Mommy's coffee and paper time) await!

It's getting to be that time of year when you slather sunblock on your kids and take advantage of the great California weather. To the Zoo! The playground! The beach! The hiking trails!

There are so many opportunities for us Bay Area families and yet, sometimes you just want to stay home. To avoid the crowds. Avoid the travel and missed nap-times. To not have to pack snacks and sippy cups and five changes of clothes.

For those days when we don't want to or just can't manage to pile into the car, we simply venture to the backyard.

We make mud pies and do all manner of water-play, but something was missing from our sunny afternoon adventures.

So, last weekend, we built one using locally sourced (and free) wood, some landscape cloth, a bit of manual labor and, of course, sand galore! Our one-day DIY used no nails or cuts and only cost the amount of thirty bags of sand.
