The History Files: Earliest Photo Of Downtown San Leandro?

There aren't many photographs of San Leandro in the 1850s, 1860s, or 1870s. This one, taken circa 1865, might be the earliest view of our downtown plaza area.

This view of downtown San Leandro is from a book called "1860-1870 California Views." Taken circa 1865, it might be the earliest photograph of our downtown plaza area.

Do you see the Estudillo House (look for the building with a flagpole)?

The larger dirt road crossing the tracks will become today's East 14th Street. The small dirt road running off the right edge of the photograph will become today's Estudillo Avenue
