"Bikes for Tykes" Distribution This Saturday

Over 400 boys and girls between the ages of 3-14 will be receiving new bicycles this holiday season.

The San Leandro Police Officers Association and SLPD Chief Sandra Spagnoli invite you to this year’s Bikes for Tykes distribution on Saturday from 9:00 am to noon at the Davis Street Family Resource Center at 3081 Teagarden Street.

The SLPOA's “Bikes for Tykes” program was revitalized four years ago by Officer Louie Brandt who has cumulatively raised $75,000 over the years while leading the program’s fundraising efforts.

To ensure the new bicycles are received by disadvantaged youth, SLPOA has partnered with the Davis Street Family Resource Center in its bicycle distribution during the non-profit agency’s annual “Holiday Basket and Toy program.” Each income-eligible family that registered with Davis Street’s holiday assistance in November was encouraged to submit their child/children’s names into a “Bikes for Tykes” drawing. This year over 400 boys and girls between the ages of 3-14 have been randomly selected from that drawing. Phone calls are currently being made to families to notify them of their child’s special Christmas gift.

Officer Brandt and the SLPOA team have raised approximately $20,000 this year through a series of event fundraisers and business and household visits to secure the purchase of over 350 new bicycles from the San Leandro Walmart and the additional donations of 70 more bicycles. Over 100 community businesses and individuals have contributed and sponsored these efforts. The Kiwanis Club of San Leandro has generously donated approximately $3,500 to purchase 400 new helmets. San Leandro Walmart offered discounts and donated countless hours in assembling each and every bike so that it is ready to take home.
