Police Identify Alameda Man Slain While Trying To Help Mother-In-Law

Autorities have identified the Alameda man who was shot and killed Friday night when he tried to prevent robbers from accosting his mother-in-law while she was unloading her car in front of her own home in San Leandro. The victim is Delun Pan, 32. He died at Eden Hospital of a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was the first homicide victim of the year in San Leandro. The incident occurred at about 9:20 pm Friday with a 911 call reporting a shooting on the 15500 block of Harbor Way. Officers arrived on the scene to find Pan lying on the sidewalk bleeding. He was taken to Eden Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police Arrest Registered Sex Offender Who Followed Teen Jogger

Police arrested Alton Watson, 50, a registered sex offender, for parole violation and for annoying and molesting a child in connection with an incident that occurred Sunday evening on the 1200 block of Estudillo Avenue. According to police, a 15-year-old jogger was running for exercise when she noticed a man walking alongside her who seemed suspicious. The man followed the jogger home and stopped outside her residence and fled when family members went outside to confront him. Officers responded to the area and detained Watson, who was identified as the suspect by the victim.

Zocalo Coffeehouse Named Best in Bay Area

San Leandro's got a lot to brag about these days: an ultra fast fiber optic loop, a new Kaiser Hospital and now the best place in the Bay Area to have coffee. Zocalo Coffeehouse won the 2013 Bay Area A-list in its category in a region-wide competition that that drew more than 42,000 total votes. Owners Tim Holmes and Mitch Huitema have created a lovely space that draws neighborhood residents out for a cup, businesspeople making deals, students in study groups and parents letting their tots burn off steam.
