State Budget Passes, Pedestrian Killed and a Three-Part Series on the Bal Theatre in This Week's Coverage

A look back at the local news that made headlines this week.

Monday

Monday marked one month since San Mateo nursing student Michelle Le went missing from a Kaiser parking garage in Hayward. that she will be found, and organized another search party in the rural East Bay on Saturday.

San Leandro police are looking for a suspect who neighbors say at about 12:45 a.m. Monday on the 1300 block of 145th Avenue. The believed target was uninjured in the shooting.

with the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) recently launched a free volunteer program to send trained Egyptologists into Bay Area classrooms for lessons on ancient Egyptians.

Tuesday

Take a look at Part I of our series on the Bal Theatre, which that theater owner Dan Dillman negotiated with city officials over the last few months. In it, Dillman would be allowed to organize live performances, but would be restricted in how many events could be shown and how many people could be on the stage at one time. 

Patch caught up with the , whose members include kids from San Leandro and surrounding communities.The club teaches gardening and animal husbandry — many members are showing animals at this year's Alameda County fair — plus photography, cooking, fishing, scrapbooking and even line dancing.

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to of the county's five regions. The boundaries of each district look similar to the current ones, and the board will give its final approval to adopt the new map at its July 12 meeting.

Wednesday

In Part II of our series on the Bal Theatre, read a , which has struggled for 65 years to turn a profit under numerous owners and managers.

The late Tuesday evening. The spending plan axes local redevelopment agencies, closes 70 state parks, cuts funding for state universities and does not include tax extensions that were proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Thursday

The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau near Bayfair Mall on Wednesday as 79-year-old Karl Karlsson. He died hours after being transported to the hospital. Police are investigating the accident.

Friday

July 1 marked the beginning of the new fiscal year, and with it a . The annual vehicle license fee also dropped half a percentage point. Shoppers in San Leandro will now pay 9 percent sales tax instead of the 10 percent they had been paying since April 1, when the new voter-approved tax hike took effect.

On Thursday Gov. Jerry Brown signed the state's upcoming budget plan into law, and now , including the potential elimination of the city's redevelopment agency, possible mid-year cuts to schools and the redirection of vehicle license fee revenues from the city to the state.

Those planning to use illegal fireworks this 4th of July weekend should watch out. Fireworks are illegal in San Leandro and police could arrest those caught using them.
