Property Taxes Due on Sunday

But you better have your envelope in the mail by Saturday.

If you want to avoid a late fee on your property tax bill this spring, you better have the envelope in the mail on Saturday.

The deadline for the semi-annual tax is April 10. However, this year that date falls on a Sunday, so any letters dropped off on that day will probably get an April 11 postmark.

The taxes are collected by the Alameda County Treasurer-Tax Collector's office.

The City of San Leandro counts on property taxes for about 21 percent of its General Fund. 

The city expects to collect about $15.4 million in property taxes this fiscal year and, given the continued weak economy, the same amount next year.

A portion of property tax revenue goes to the state. The remaining portion is divided up between special districts such as BART and mosquito abatement.

Measure M, the school facilities bond, will raise annual property taxes by $25 per $100,000 of assessed value starting in fiscal year 2012, which starts July 1.
