Nurses Will Strike San Leandro Hospital Thursday
A one-day walkout will be extended four days by Sutter Health, which says it has to hire replacements for a minimum of five days.
About 225 registered nurses will strike San Leandro Hospital Thursday and another 425 will walk out of Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
Sutter Health, which operates both facilities, has hired 50 replacements for San Leandro and another 150 temporary nurses for Eden. Officials said there will be no stoppage of care at the centers.
Cindy Dove, Eden’s marketing and communications manager said that while the nurses' union is planning only a one-day walkout, the hospital will shut them out for five days. That's due to arrangements with the company through which replacement nurses are hired, which requires a five-day minimum commitment, she said.

The California Nurses Association and National Nurses United, the strike's organizers, said they are responding to Sutter’s attack on RN patient advocacy rights, big cuts in nurses’ health care, and to support Kaiser co-workers.
