Delays On BART After Accident

A woman ended up underneath a train at Bay Fair station in San Leandro, disrupting service along the Fremont line in all directions.

Major delays were reported on BART in Alameda County during much of the Friday afternoon commute.

The delays began due to a "medical emergency" at the Bay Fair station in San Leandro shortly before 3:30 p.m.

The disruptions were significant until about 5 p.m., when BART officials said the delays had become only "slight." At 5:45 p.m., BART reported all trains were back on time.

BART spokesman Jim Allison said the problems began about 3:20 p.m. when a woman was reported underneath a Fremont-to-Richmond train at the transit agency's Bay Fair station.

The woman was removed and taken to Eden hospital. Her condition is not known. It's also not clear how she ended up under the train.

"When [the train] stopped, people were really annoyed and complaining," said BART rider Maya Aberra. "Then someone said there was someone on the tracks and then half the train shut up."

The Bay Fair station was closed during the emergency operation and service was suspended at that station as well as at the Oakland Coliseum, Hayward and Castro Valley stations.

"It added like 20 minutes to my commute," said passenger Amy Mcalpin, who was traveling from the San Francisco Embarcadero station at the time of the incident.

The Bay Fair station was reopened about 3:50 p.m. and service was restored.

Allison said the lines mostly affected were the Fremont-to-Daly City, Fremont-to-Richmond and Pleasanton-Dublin lines.
