LEARN AND PLAY CHESS

  • Where/When: San Lorenzo Library; Wednesday, May 18, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Why Go: Volunteers from the 4-H Club will teach you and your family how to play chess. Then you can compete with your family members or others at the library.
  • Pricing: Free

MARSHALL SPRING CARNIVAL

  • Where/When: Marshall Elementary School in Castro Valley; Friday, May 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Why Go: Enjoy a night out with your whole family. There will be games, food, music, face painting and a petting zoo.

INTRODUCTION TO FLY FISHING

  • Where/When: 37270 Niles Blvd., Fremont; Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Why Go: Learn a new sport with your family. There will be expert flycasting  instruction for beginner and experienced persons.
  • Pricing: Free

GERMAN MAY FESTIVAL

  • Where/When: Jack London Square, Oakland; Sunday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Why Go: This family-oriented food festival includes contests, games, entertainment and hands-on activities with growers, chefs, purveyors, businesses and cookbook authors.
