1. ORCHID GARDEN FUNDRAISER

Where/When: 462 Broadmoor Blvd., Saturday, April 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Participate: Because orchids are some of the coolest flowers on the planet. Check out this backyard orchid collection and help raise money for the scholarship foundation of the East Bay Retired Teachers' Association.

Where/When: Your house during regular garbage collection days from April through June

Why Participate: Encourage your family to recycle at home by participating in the Ready Set Recycle Contest. Households with the least amount of recyclables and compostables in their garbage relative to the whole bin will be declared the winners. Multiple winners will be announced each week and will receive cash or prizes.

Where/When: Oakland Coliseum; Saturday, April 16 ,at 6:05 p.m.

Why Go: Oakland A's versus the Detroit Tigers. Buy your lower box seats through Sole Sisters and a portion of your ticket will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Where/When: St. Paschal Parish Church in Oakland; Sunday, April 17, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Join the Oakland Symphony Chorus and experience the elegance and majesty of the Easter portions of Handel's popular oratorio, The Messiah.

Where/When: Performing Arts Center at Chabot Community College in Hayward; Sunday, April 17, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Recognize and encourage African American student achievement in southern Alameda County school districts, and acknowledge the family and community support in the lives of young people.
