Sprouts & Shutters: Ploughman's Restaurant Reopens After Remodel

Bright new interior and plans to serve dinners are among the changes to this favorite downtown San Leandro eatery.

Ploughman's Restaurant, long been a downtown San Leandro favorite, has a fresh new look.

"I've had that restaurant for 30 years and it was time to freshen it up," said owner Jot Mangat, who closed down the restaurant for about 10 weeks for a top-to-bottom makeover.

"Everything is new: ceilings, floors, kitchen," Mangat said.

Reconstruction included wheelchair restroom access.

Ploughman's, which is located at 1600 Washington Avenue, reopened quietly around St. Patrick's Day.

At least one big change lies ahead: as soon as some new kitchen equipment is installed, perhaps by mid-April, Ploughman's will begin offering early dinners.

Mangat said that once dinner service begins, the restaurant will be open from 6 am to 7 pm six days a week, and from 6 am to 3 pm on Sundays.

However, from mid-April through October, he will shut down at 3 pm on Wednesday while the Downtown Farmers Market occurs. Once the downtown festival is over Ploughman's will stay open until 7 pm on Wednesdays as well.

For now, the posted hours are 6 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday; 7 am to 2 pm on Saturday and 7 am to 1 pm on Sunday.

Mangat also owns Englander Sports Pub and Restaurant and The Vine Wine and Tapas, two other downtown dining and entertainment destinations.
