SmallBiz: Job Picture Stronger At 'Growth' Firms

March was a weak month for jobs, but growth firms out-performed in hiring -- emphasizing the importance of San Leandro's futuristic fiber loop.

 

Payrolls at a subset of smaller firms expanded at seven times the overall national job-growth rate in March according to SMBeat, an analysis by , the human resources outsourcing firm based in San Leandro.

The TriNet analysis looked at 5,000 entrepreneurial businesses whose employees earn approximately $100,000 in annual base salary. These companies fall primarily into three broad industry segments: technology, professional services, and financial services.

So its sample skews to so-called growth companies and leaves out many mom and pop, retail and other small businesses.

It is these growth companies that San Leandro hopes to attract through the Lit San Leandro .

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced the creation of 120,000 new jobs for the US economy in March. That was a weak figure.

Unemployment rate in the East Bay edged upward in March.

The state Employment Department Department reported in April that the jobless rate in Alameda County inched up to 10.8 percent, a little higher than the 10.7 percent recorded in February.

Rates varied in different communities. Unemployment rates are based on where people live, not where they work.

The unemployment rate in San Leandro ticked up to 10.7 percent from 10.5 percent.

San Lorenzo's jobless rate is now 8 percent, up from 7.9 percent.

The Cherryland area near San Lorenzo has the second highest unemployment rate in the region, behind Oakland. Its jobless rate is now 15.6 percent, up from 15.4 percent in February.

By contrast, Castro Valley's jobless rate was 6.4 percent in March, still up a bit from 6.3 percent in February, but enviable by comparison.
