Poll: Best, Worst, Oddest Valentine's Treats

Share comments or pictures of the products, places or people who will hold a special place in your heart on this holiday.

No one can put a price on love.

But the National Retail Federation tracks how much Americans plan to spend on Valentine's Day and its survey says the average celebrant will shower $126 of largesse on loved ones this Valentine's Day.

Here are some highlights of a random sample of Americans:

  • Cupid expects more from men, who are projected to spend $169 or roughly double the $86 women are likely to expend;
  • Most of this spending, about $74 on average, will be lavished on spouses or significant others;
  • Another $25 will be gifted to children and other family, and $7 for friends;
  • Pets will not be forgotten and can expect an average of $4.50 in treats.

By category, people are most likely to spend on (totals exceed 100 percent because of multiple choices ):

  • Candy (50.5%), flowers (36%) and/or an evening out (35.6%)
  • Jewelry (18.9%) and gift cards (13.3%) were also popular.
