Patch Clips: Patrons Empty Shelves At Hostess Outlet In San Leandro As Shutdown Looms

The parking lot outside the Hostess Outlet in San Leandro was full Friday but the shelves inside the store were emptying fast as patrons stocked up on Wonder Bread, Ho Hos and Twinkies before the company shuts down in a messy bankruptcy and labor dispute.

"I've been coming here since I was five years old," said Angela Abreu, now 32, who carried out four full bags.

Andy and Carla Arias drove away somewhat disappointed that they'd only managed to grab a few handfuls of Ho Hos and similar treats.

"I hope someone picks up the brands like they did when Mother's Cookies went out of business," Carla Arias said.

The run on the local outlet on Montague Street came after Hostess Brands asked a bankruptcy court for permission to liquidate the company, lay off 18,500 workers, close 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers, in order to focus on selling its assets -- presumably its well-known brands.

Founded in 1930, the company produces Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Ho Ho's, Sno Balls and Donettes, as well as Wonder bread, one of the best-selling white breads in the United States.
